17-year-old accused in Barrie mall jewelry store robbery denied bail

A 17-year-old accused of being one of five young men involved in a robbery at a Georgian Mall jewelry store in August has been denied bail.

It was the teen’s second opportunity at release after he was denied bail more than a month ago.

Surveillance video, obtained by CTV News, captured the moment four thieves in masks and hooded sweatshirts entered Dia Amore Jewellers inside the Barrie mall armed with hammers. The video showed the four thieves smash display cases and load jewelry into bags. This was the second time in twelve months the jewelry store had been targeted.

Justice Lynne Saunders ruled the young man, whose identify is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, would not be released despite a surety offering to supervise him.

Two of his co-accused were granted bail, a 16-year-old alleged getaway driver from North York was released to his mother hours after his arrest, and a 17-year-old police said was found with a gun on him, was released under strict conditions including house arrest.

Police said the five young men were arrested after their stolen Honda Civic skidded off the road and got stuck in gravel along Innisfil Beach Road while trying to flee following a brief pursuit on Highway 400.

Two others arrested, Jahzyi Smith, 19, of Mississauga and Ahmed Al-Saeed, 21, of Barrie, were denied bail and remain behind bars.

Al-Saeed, CTV News has learned, worked as a mechanic in Barrie up until about a week prior to the jewelry store robbery.

Any evidence heard during court proceedings is covered by a publication ban.

Allegations against the young man and his co-accused have not been tested in court.
